1. Mar 22,  · great lineup on this. Grant Green and John Patton as sidemen. Patton is the standout on this album for me. Funky Mama - straight ahead blues. Patton's solo is favorite on this track. Love Walked In - lyrical theme, *Spaceman Twist - distinctive run in theme, exuberant track that swings Sow Belly Blues - Ben Dixon really Drives this one/5(21).

5. The original compositions - which form the bulk of the album - are mostly blues and soul vamps that provide an excellent foundation for the combo to work hot grooves and soaring solos. Patton contributes 9-minute "Funky Mama" while Lou contributes "Spaceman Twist" and the wonderful minute "Sow Belly Blues"/5(15).

8. The Natural Soul finds Lou Donaldson delving deeply into soul-jazz, recording a set of funky, greasy instrumentals with only a few references to hard bop. Donaldson occasionally sounds a little awkward with the relaxed groove of The Natural Soul, as does trumpeter Tommy Turrentine, but the trio of guitarist Grant Green, organist John Patton, and drummer Ben Dixon keep .
